Crab Island Allotments
Crab Island is one of the nine districts of Banjul, capital city of The Gambia. The Crab Island Upper Basic School was established in 1957 under British colonial rule and could accommodate schoolchildren aged between 13 and 16. It became one of the best-known schools in the country, but was closed in 2012 because of the poor state of the buildings.
With the support of the city link, an allotment site was established in 2017, giving around twenty gardeners the opportunity to cultivate a piece of land and thus supplement their family income. Renovation works on the classroom buildings and the main hall on Crab Island began in 2020. The entire site will be restored and room will be made for activities aimed at bringing about sustainable development and a social economy.
